North Carolina's Ties to Piracy Run Deep

During the early 1700's, ruthless gangs of pirates roamed the Atlantic Coast targeting merchant ships carring products from Europe to the Colonies. Many of the most celebrated and feared pirates established their base of opportations along the North Carolina Coast.

At the time, North Carolina had a reputation for being a lawless territory with a corrupt government that was pirate-friendly. Today, Archaeologist are actively scouring the ocean floor off the Outerbanks in search of evidence to unravel the mystery of these larger-than-life scoundrels.
